“Until a few years ago, Dirry de Bruin ran her own design studio in Rotterdam. There, she worked on a wide range of projects — from street furniture to commemorative objects — always searching for ways to connect form and meaning. That search still lies at the heart of her work, although her practice has since become freer, more personal, and more intuitive.
Materiality and vulnerability play a central role in her work. Dirry collaborates closely with master glassblowers and explores how traditional craftsmanship can be combined with a contemporary visual language. Her working process is precise and focused: glass is hand-ground, wood carefully polished, and gold leaf meticulously applied. This artisanal approach requires time and attention, something that is tangible in the final result. Every element serves a clear purpose within the whole. In this way, a subtle tension emerges between gloss and matte, old and new, fragile and powerful.
Dirry’s choice to work with glass reflects her open and transparent approach to artistic practice. The Y-conical cloche vases she developed are refined yet accessible. Crafted with skill, without becoming nostalgic. Her online presence reflects that same sense of care: attentive to detail, aesthetics, and content.
In her work, Dirry’s love for form and material comes together with an almost ritualistic way of making. Each object is unique and invites stillness and attentive observation — because ultimately, it is all about looking.”

“Tot enkele jaren geleden runde Dirry de Bruin haar eigen ontwerpstudio in Rotterdam. Ze werkte daar aan uiteenlopende projecten – van straatmeubilair tot herinneringsobjecten – en zocht steeds naar manieren om vorm en betekenis met elkaar te verbinden. Die zoektocht is nog altijd de kern van haar werk, al is haar praktijk inmiddels vrijer, persoonlijker en intuïtiever geworden.
Materialiteit en kwetsbaarheid spelen daarin een centrale rol. Dirry werkt intensief samen met meesterglasblazers en onderzoekt hoe traditioneel vakmanschap zich laat combineren met een hedendaagse beeldtaal. Haar werkproces is precies en geconcentreerd: glas wordt met de hand geslepen, hout gepolijst, bladgoud zorgvuldig aangebracht. Deze ambachtelijke benadering vraagt tijd en aandacht en dat voel je terug in het eindresultaat. Elk onderdeel heeft een duidelijke functie in het geheel. Zo ontstaat een subtiel spanningsveld tussen glans en mat, tussen oud en nieuw, tussen fragiel en krachtig.
Dirry’s keuze om te werken met glas weerspiegelt haar open en heldere benadering van het kunstenaarschap. De Y-conische stolpvazen die ze ontwikkelde zijn verfijnd, maar toegankelijk. Ambachtelijk, zonder nostalgisch te worden. Ook haar online aanwezigheid vertoont diezelfde zorgvuldigheid: met oog voor detail, esthetiek en inhoud.
In haar werk komt Dirry’s liefde voor vorm en materiaal samen met een bijna rituele manier van maken. Elk object is uniek en nodigt uit tot vertraging en aandachtig kijken, want bij kijken moet het blijven.”

The Dutch artist Dirry de Bruin [1965] studied at the Design Academy-Eindhoven (Cum Laude)
Dirry is considered an artist/designer who has developed convincingly in free glasswork in recent years. She occupies a unique position in the field and embodies sculptural installation art and craftsmanship in her oeuvre. A large part of her work is handmade and Dirry manages the craftsmen and the production process.
After her career at West8, Studio Marijke van der Wijst and VHP, Dirry founded her own studio in Rotterdam in 2012 and has since realized works for Dutch Municipalities, Port Authorities, Vescom Deurne, Museum Kröller Müller, etc. In 2011, Dirry was in the final for the Dutch Design Award with her furniture design for Walstroom Drechtsteden.
In recent years, Dirry has been making free work in glass combined with traditional artisanal materials.
Work and processes
Characteristic of Dirry’s working method is her manipulation of existing production processes, combined with a artisanal finishing touch. With this approach she creates opportunities for diversity within one theme. Collaborating with all possible disciplines gives freedom and richness to the creations. Dirry therefore does not limit herself to one type of material in her work, but works with all processes in glass, wood, metal, plastics, textiles, precious metals and gold leaf.
For Dirry, the end goal and process are inextricably linked. Each series evolves through the repetition of the production process. The results can be as surprising for Dirry as for the viewer.

Dirry wordt beschouwd als een kunstenaar / ontwerper, die zich de laatste jaren op overtuigende wijze ontwikkelt in het vrije glaswerk. Ze bekleedt een unieke positie in het vakgebied en belichaamt sculpturale installatiekunst en vakmanschap in haar oeuvre. Een groot deel van haar werk is handgemaakt en Dirry stuurt de ambachtslieden en het productieproces aan.
Na haar carrière bij West8, bureau Marijke van der Wijst en VHP richtte Dirry in 2012 een eigen studio op in Rotterdam en realiseerde sindsdien werken voor Nederlandse Gemeentes, Havenbedrijven, Vescom Deurne, Museum Kröller Müller etc. In 2011 stond Dirry in de finale voor de Dutch Design Award met haar meubelontwerp voor Walstroom Drechtsteden.
De laatste jaren maakt Dirry vrij werk in glas en ambachtelijke materialen.
Werk en processen
Kenmerkend voor Dirry’s werkwijze is haar manipulatie van bestaande productieprocessen, gecombineerd met een ambachtelijke finishing touch. Met deze aanpak creëert ze mogelijkheden tot diversiteit binnen één thema. Het samenwerken met alle mogelijke disciplines geeft vrijheid en rijkdom aan de creaties. Dirry beperkt zich daarom in haar werk niet tot één soort materiaal, maar werkt met alle processen in glas, hout, metaal, kunststoffen, textiel en edelmetalen.
Einddoel en proces zijn voor Dirry onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Elke serie evolueert door de herhaling van het productieproces. De resultaten kunnen voor Dirry net zo verrassend zijn als voor de kijker.
